Something in Our House Makes a Noise at Fourteen Minutes Past Four and It Has Been Getting Closer for a Year

Read in episode 007, Disturbing Home Alone Quiet Horror Stories, from 0:15

It started in the loft. In January it was on the landing. Last week it was outside our bedroom door, and my wife heard it too, and she has never heard it before.

I am a light sleeper and I have been my whole life, and I mention that because it is the only reason any of this got noticed.

We moved into this house in 2022. It is a semi from about 1953 with a bit built on the back in the nineties, three bedrooms, a loft with a proper ladder, and nothing at all wrong with it. The survey was clean. It is warm and it is dry and the neighbours are quiet.

The noise started in the November of last year.

It is one noise, once. It is not a creak and it is not a bang and it is not the boiler, and I will come to all of those. The closest I can get is that it is the sound of something small being put down on a hard surface. A cup on a worktop. A pebble on a windowsill. Not dropped. Put down.

The first time I heard it I looked at the clock, because that is what you do, and it said 4:14.

It is always 4:14.

I have checked it more times than is reasonable. The bedside clock is radio controlled and it agrees with my phone. There have been mornings where I was awake before it and I lay there with my eyes open watching the numbers change from 4:13 to 4:14, and then it came.

It is not every night. That is the first thing everybody asks. It is roughly two nights in three, and I have kept a note, and there is no pattern I can find in which nights.

It has never happened at 4:13 or 4:15.

I did the things you do.

The boiler fires at half five for the heating and it makes a completely different noise, a soft whump you can hear in the pipes. I turned the heating off for a fortnight in December and the noise carried on.

The immersion is on a timer and the timer is mechanical and it clicks, and it clicks at 11pm and 6am, and I know both of those clicks well.

There is nothing on any timer at 4:14. I went round and checked all of it, the immersion, the boiler, the two plug timers on the lamps downstairs, the fridge freezer, the extractor.

It is not the roof. It is not expansion or contraction, because that is a series of ticks over an hour as things cool, not one placed sound at the same minute.

It is not next door. I asked, carefully, and they are a couple in their sixties who go to bed at ten and get up at seven and think I am mad, politely.

The first four months it was in the loft.

Above us and to the left, over the landing, which is where the hatch is. It sounded far away in the way that a noise upstairs from downstairs sounds far away, and if I had not been the sort of person who lies awake I would never have picked it out at all.

I went up there in the January with a torch and a headtorch and I spent about two hours on it.

There is a water tank, boarded floor over half of it, the Christmas things, four boxes of my mother's papers I have never gone through, and the insulation. No droppings. No runs in the insulation. No feathers, no nest, no wasps, no gnawing, no wires stripped. I had a pest man out in the February because I wanted somebody who was not me to say it and he was there fifty minutes and he said there is nothing living in your loft and he did not charge me.

I put a camera up there anyway.

Two weeks of it, motion triggered, and I got fourteen clips and every one of them was the insulation settling in a draught from the eaves, and none of them were at 4:14, and the noise happened nine times in those two weeks.

The camera never triggered once at 4:14.

In the February it moved.

A person could talk themselves into anything here, so I will give you what changed and nothing else. Until the end of January it came from above and to the left. From about the second week of February it came from above and to the right.

Above and to the right of our bed is the landing ceiling nearer the top of the stairs. About eight feet along.

By April it had come down. On the landing now, outside the airing cupboard.

In July it was outside our door.

Not at our door. At the far end of the landing, which is where the bathroom is, and that is maybe twelve feet from the door of our room.

I have to say something about my wife here.

She has never heard it. Not once, in a year, and she is not a heavy sleeper particularly, she is just a normal one who wakes up when there is a reason to. I have woken her for it twice, deliberately, both times sitting up in bed at 4:13 with my hand on her shoulder, and both times it came and she did not stir and I did not know whether to be relieved or not.

She has been very good about it. She has not once suggested I am unwell and she has not once suggested I get it looked at, and both of those would have been fair.

What she said, in about the May, was: is it getting closer.

I said yes.

She said, right, and then she said, tell me when it gets to the door.

It got to the door last week.

Wednesday night into Thursday morning. I was awake, because I am nearly always awake now at that time, and I have stopped pretending that is a coincidence.

It was on the other side of our bedroom door. Not on the landing. Against it, at the bottom, the way a sound is when something is put down on the carpet right up against a door.

And she sat up.

She sat up before I did. She sat up at 4:14 in the morning in the dark and she said, in a completely awake voice, what was that.

We have not talked about it properly since.

We have talked about it the way two people talk about something they have agreed not to make bigger. She has said, twice, that she does not want to open that door at that time, and I have said I know, and that is where it has been left.

I have not opened it.

That is not bravery and it is not sense. I have lain there with my hand near the handle for twenty minutes after it and not done it, and I could not tell you what I think is out there, because I do not think anything is. I have been in that house at every hour of the night for three years. I have gone down for a glass of water at four in the morning a hundred times.

I could open that door tonight at 4:14 and there would be a landing and an airing cupboard and a bathroom light I never turn off.

I know that.

One thing and then I have finished.

I said the sound is something small being put down on a hard surface, and that has bothered me for a year, because the landing is carpeted and so is the loft floor and so is the boarding, and there is nothing hard up there at all.

There is one hard surface on that landing. It is the little strip of laminate the airing cupboard sits on, about a foot deep, that the man who did the floors ran out of carpet for.

The noise came from directly over it for two months. April and May. Longer than it stayed anywhere else in the house.

I have turned that over at four in the morning more times than I want to say, and the version I cannot get rid of is this. If something is moving through a house a few feet at a time, and it stops for two months at the one spot where the floor is hard, it is not stopping because the floor is hard.

It is stopping because that is the only place in the house where you would hear it.
